Pioneering the Revival of our Nation’s Scientific Heritage

The Emirate of Sharjah represents the story of a city reinventing the treasures of history to build a bridge based upon civilization and culture in order to establish a present rooted in its heritage and blended with its legacy of knowledge through systematic research, studies and investigation. Such will reveal the eternal truths and guide the present towards innovation and revitalizing the Arab-Islamic civilization through rereading and directing the history of the sciences established by Muslim scientists in the fields of medicine, physics, chemistry, astronomy and other domains of science. Indeed, early Muslim scientists manifested a cultural bridge of knowledge and a lamp for the modern sciences, which lighted the darkness of the Middle Ages, and the contributions of Muslim scientists constituted the blocks of science and knowledge, which have been unsurpassed by time.

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University of Sharjah (may Allah protect him), eminent in his own right for his vast knowledge, has faithfully and effectively raised the torch for revitalizing the Islamic nation in order to maintain the heritage of distinguished Muslim scientists. The aim of His Highness is to revitalize the unique scientific contributions of Muslim scientists, who were influential partners in developing the sciences, literature and arts produced by all of humankind, which have enriched contemporary knowledge in the service of culture, knowledge and humanity and illuminated the pages of civilizations.

The Sharjah International Foundation for the History of Arab and Muslim Sciences (SIFHAMS) represents the latest institute of knowledge among other such luminous minarets in Sharjah, according to the vision of His Highness. The foundation is to be a world-leading scientific institution, serving Arab-Islamic scientific heritage in its various domains. It aims to realize the vision and mission of His Highness towards revitalizing Arab-Islamic scientific heritage through collecting, preserving, defining, investigating, disseminating, translating and introducing this heritage at the national, regional and international levels. The foundation further serves as a main bridge for dialogue and communication and a platform for interaction between cultures.

SIFHAMS endeavors to become a leading global platform to shed light on the contributions of Arab and Muslim scientists in the history of the sciences and their pivotal role in the making of today’s society, building bridges of dialogue, and establishing human values, coexistence and tolerance. It further seeks to shed light on the moderate, tolerant values of our Islamic religion, which prevailed in the Arab-Islamic civilization and contributed to the heritage of the sciences. Additionally, it seeks to embrace innovation and attract renowned researchers interested in Arab-Islamic scientific heritage to evoke the experience and path
of the great nation that produced the civilization whose contributions constituted a knowledge base for communication and cultural exchange between civilizations throughout the ages.

Establishing the Sharjah International Foundation for the History of Arab and Muslim Sciences, according to the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University of Sharjah (may Allah protect him), has come at this time as a result of the urgent need imposed upon it by globalization to formulate theories and produce evidence of the greatness of this civilization. Accordingly, the foundation seeks to establish an integrative and innovative work environment in order to reveal the majestic treasures of the civilization that our ancestors produced in various fields of knowledge, revitalize them with modern scientific means and employ them in the service of the present and future. The foundation seeks to accomplish this through increasing the role of research and investigative centers and their role in informing current and future generations of the prosperous times during which our nation was lifted atop the majestic peaks of glory and sovereignty. In this manner, the foundation seeks to motivate such generations to restore this majestic glory and make our region the capital of human civilization once again.

In conclusion, on behalf of the Sharjah International Foundation for the History of Arab and Muslim Sciences (SIFHAMS), we extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, for his unlimited support in reviving the Arab and Islamic scientific heritage in the Emirate of Sharjah, which is considered a beacon of science and innovation.
