Director's Message

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all beings, who says in his great book, the Holy Quran {Say: Are those who know equal to those who do not know? Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.} Prayers and peace be upon the messenger of mercy to all beings, who made the seeking of knowledge incumbent on every Muslim man and woman, and prayers and peace upon his family, companions and all those who follow his guidance until the Day of Judgement.

Indeed, the greatness of any civilization is measured by the depth of the positive legacy it leaves in the collective memory of humanity and what it creates of achievements, in writing or through construction, as a testimony to the advancement of its intellect and the greatness of its values. The Islamic civilization represents a luminous page in the history of civilizations because Muslims, over consecutive historical eras, were active partners in the progress of the sciences, literature and the arts, which contributed to the advancement and progress of humanity. The tremendous number of architectural remnants, handicrafts, decorative arts, scientific literature, encyclopedias, lexicons of all types, scientific theories in the various fields of knowledge, and technological achievements in different specializations to make life easier and better give testimony to the greatness of this civilization.

Stemming from the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University of Sharjah, which articulates belief in the accumulation of human knowledge, the importance of knowledge production in lessening the distance between people, and the need to instill values of tolerance and coexistence, His Highness directed the establishment of the Sharjah International Foundation for the History of Muslim and Arab Sciences (SIFHAMS). His vision calls for the Foundation to become a bridge of Muslim and Arab Sciences (SIFHAMS). His vision calls for the Foundation to become a bridge of communication, acculturation, dialogue and research with the aim of reviving the scientific legacy of Arabs and Muslims and promoting its identity and encouraging communication with others.

The Foundation further seeks to become a platform for scientists, scholars and students of science interested in the Arab and Muslim heritage in order to contribute to realizing the vision of His Highness, which calls for revitalizing the legacy of the nation in various domains and investing in it towards a brighter future for the nation.

SIFHAMS has been established to meet the urgent need of the nation during these historical times in which some call for and believe in the end of history and the clash of civilizations, so that we may say to them, “Let us come together and reach some common ground. Let us learn about each other and share dialogue through a common scientific heritage. Let us develop the means of dialogue between us to become closer in our understanding of one another.”

Indeed, whoever observes the ambitious vision, objectives, programs, and plans of the Foundation becomes aware that SIFHAMS is the project of a nation aspiring to instill the values of rapprochement, mutual understanding, dialogue, coexistence, and tolerance through evoking the experience of the Arab Islamic Civilization. This civilization embraced the sciences, scholars of different races, creeds, sects and religions and exemplified tolerance and respect for others such that it vastly multiplied scientific production, which contributed to the progress of the contemporary sciences. The objective of the Foundation is to rectify the perceptions of others and to open new horizons of acculturation and dialogue based upon mutual appreciation and respect.

With such a foundation, the dream that many scholars have sought for years will be realized by the grace of Allah and the unlimited support of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University of Sharjah, who has spared no time or effort in directing and keeping abreast of the establishment of the Foundation step by step. May Allah reward His Highness for his goodness towards scholars and seekers of knowledge, and may all of these good deeds be held in the balance of his deeds on Judgement Day.
